6 days in Garfagnana by train

6 days for a journey through time where art and culture meet.

A  territory that connects the Apennines to the Tyrrhenian sea with its different cultures: Romanesque churches and castles, and museums, hermitages and fortified villages, between the mountains and the sea, a very rich choice of works of art and monuments.

By train along the Lucca – Aulla railway, also known as the “Garfagnana railway”, through small and large towns where history and local traditions are preserved by the local communities.

Programme

Presentation of the programme by one of our representatives. Visit (exterior only) to the Rocca Ariostesca of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, which dominates the centre of the village and which in the 16th century hosted the poet Ludovico Ariosto for three years, who had been named governor of the province of Garfagnana, at that time under the rule of the Este family. We take the 09:35 train to the railway station of Borgo a Mozzano. Visit to admire the Ponte della Maddalena, known as the Ponte del Diavolo (Devil’s Bridge): one of the most original constructions in all of Tuscany. A beautiful example of medieval architecture, it connects the two banks of the Serchio River. Its singular profile, with its large round arch flanked by three smaller arches, has inspired numerous artists on the  legends of its construction. We take the 11.46 train back to the Ghivizzano – Coreglia railway station. Ghivizzano welcomes us with its castle. A walk through the village. Guided tour of an artisan pork processing workshop, from the production and marketing of pork butchery products to typical local cold cuts such as Biroldo della Garfagnana, lard, sausage and”  soppressata sausage “ , passing on peasant memories. Guided tasting. Possibility of purchasing products. We recommend the new Prosciutto Bazzone della Garfagnana e Media Valle del Serchio: Bazzone Cotto ham ,del Podere delle Pianacce, the mark of excellence. This is a leg of Italian pork selected at origin for the production of the raw ham. The ham is flavoured with a natural brine prepared by boiling aromatic herbs and vegetables. It is boned by hand and vacuum-packed before being steamed. Lunch at the “Antica Locanda San Leonardo”.  In the afternoon we take the 14.53 train back to the railway station of Castelvecchio Pascoli. At the Fortezza delle Verrucole you can visit the Archeo Park, which is a living museum offering historical reconstructions. Following this you can choose to visit

  1. to the Selva Buffardello adventure park to spend some time surrounded by nature, fun filled sport and adventure.

or

  1. to the beautiful historic centre of San Romano in Garfagnana, with its narrow, cobbled streets.

Our journey, on foot, continues reaching beautiful and skilfully maintained villages such as Sambuca, whose church, dedicated to San Pantaleone rises on a spur of rock .

After crossing the bridge over the Serchio river called “della Villetta” on foot we reach the railway station of Villetta – San Romano. With the 17:22 or 18:36 train we quickly return to Castelnuovo di Garfagnana. Dinner in a tavern. Return to the hotel. Overnight stay.

We take the 09:35 train to the Camporgiano train station for a visit (exterior only) of the Rocca degli Estensi. Built on a strategic site in the Garfagnana, dominating the upper Serchio valley, it has been the residence of government commissioners. The fortress, which stands on a rocky spur, was built around the 10th century and enlarged in the 13th century. Today it houses the Museum of Renaissance Ceramics, which were found in the well of the fortress itself. We take the 12.38 train back to Equi Terme railway station, which includes the crossing of the Apuan massif, a railway line considered to be one of the most technically interesting. Equi Terme is located close to one of the most majestic peaks of the Apuan Alps, Pizzo d’Uccello, perched on a steep hill that immediately becomes a rock.

Free time for Lunch and time at your disposal to visit the Geo-Archeo-Adventure Park of the Grotte, which allows for a diversified and customisable visiting experience, and to dive into the sulphurous waters of the Terme pool, which will allow you to spend a day in the picturesque village at the foot of the Apuan Alps. With the 16:52 or 17:58 train we quickly return to Castelnuovo di Garfagnana. Dinner in an osteria. Return to the hotel. Overnight stay.

In the morning, availability permitting (for safety reasons), we will visit Vagli di Sotto (GUIDED TOUR, IS PAID PAID BY THE CLIENT ON PLACE), one of the most famous white marble quarries in the world (marble also used for the Sala Nervi in the Vatican), located in the beautiful Arnetola Valley. We will experience the reality of the quarrymen, we will understand how work in the quarry has changed over time, (it is recommended to wear comfortable and sporty clothing and shoes with sturdy soles). If the above is not possible, an alternative is a visit to the Lipu Oasis of Campocatino: a primitive hollow overlooking the valley. Free time for  lunch and relaxation on the shores of the lake. In the afternoon we visit the new suspension bridge and Lake Vagli which, when it is emptied for maintenance work, magically brings to the surface the ghostly ruins of a ghost town: Fabbriche di Careggine. On the way back we will make a stop to a cheese factory. The producer will open the doors of his factory and will show us the milk process. We will dedicate ourselves to the tasting of various cheeses of own production, with bread and honey.
