We pass through the historical centre of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana and follow the “Sentiero dell’Ariosto” (Ariosto’s path) to Torrite, where we begin to enter the Apuan Alps. The picturesque village of Isola Santa and its deep green lake will be our first interesting stop. After the visit we start to climb and the view of the lake and the majestic Apuan Alps is breathtaking.
We will have lunch with this spectacular view of the peaks of the Apuan Alps, enjoying typical Garfagnana dishes in one of the valley’s historic restaurants, La Ceragetta. In the meantime we can recharge the batteries of our MTBs and then continue along the remaining route without any problems.
Once we reach the village of Careggine we will visit another panoramic spot, where the “Panchina Gigante” (Giant Bench) has been positioned, and the view of the Apuan Alps will once again be majestic.
This will be the highest point we will reach during this itinerary, from here a nice descent will take us to the next “highlight” of this “Tour”: the highest masonry railway bridge in Europe. We will cross it with our bikes before starting an enjoyable ride along the Serchio river to reach Castelnuovo di Garfagnana.
The return to the structure is scheduled around 17.30 so you can relax by the pool, perhaps enjoying an aperitif before dinner served in the large park of the structure with a view of the sunset.
INCLUDED: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner and Overnight stay
After breakfast we will leave our historical residence and Luigi’s pampering to reach the “Valle del Profondo Verde”, about 25 minutes by car. Here, once we have put on our wetsuits, boots, helmet and harness, we will begin the spectacular descent of the Rio Selvano, the most fun canyoning excursion in Tuscany (https://vimeo.com/502637649 ). We will be accompanied by professional guides with more than 20 years’ experience who will give us a unique experience. No specific skills are required for this activity. Our itinerary is totally downhill, with the possibility of diving from 1 to 8 metres, slides, abseiling and zip lines.
Duration of the excursion: approximately 4 hours, including 3 hours in the canyon.
Equipment provided: harness, helmet, wetsuit and 5 mm neoprene socks.
Necessary equipment: hiking boots or sports shoes, swimming costume, towel.
We will finish the activity around lunchtime, which concludes the services included in this package, but we recommend that you plan a lunch based on typical local dishes in one of the local restaurants. We can recommend the best ones.
What to bring
For your comfort, we recommend that you wear specific clothing for cycling, but you can also participate using normal sportswear. You must wear a helmet, which will be supplied with the bike. We suggest that you bring a small backpack with a warm, light, long-sleeved garment, sunscreen and a water bottle.
Along the route we will experience very different micro-climatic situations. Some places are particularly hot and the perceived temperatures can rise to 26/28 degrees. Other places are cooler with very low temperatures, especially in the early hours of the day and at sunset (5/10 degrees). It is also important to remember that the Apennine ridge attracts strong and violent summer storms to its peaks, with thunderstorms and hail accompanied by winds that further lower the perceived and actual temperatures. These can, in the case of strong storms at high altitudes (1600/1800 m) drop to 0 degrees or slightly more during the event.
