Programme

Day 1 Castelnuovo di Garfagnana – Event: 50th Crisciolette Festival

In the late morning arrival in Garfagnana, by own means. Meeting with the guide in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana where the tour starts. Check-In. Accommodation in the reserved rooms. Presentation of the programme by one of our representatives.

In the afternoon, visit [ outdoors only ] of the Rocca Ariostesca of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, which dominates the centre of the village and which in the 16th century hosted the poet Ludovico Ariosto for three years, who had been named governor of the province of Garfagnana, then under the rule of the Este family. Walk through the streets of the centre of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana. Possibility to buy local products in the shops. Followed by a visit to the Fortress of Mont’Alfonso. Evening event in Cascio – 50th Crisciolette Festival: wheat flour flatbreads with bacon or cheese inside, cooked between two flat iron pans. Local gastronomic specialities, music and entertainment along the village streets. From 7 pm onwards. Free dinner. Overnight stay.

Day 2 Vagli di Sotto – Event: Sillico – The bandits of Sillico at the time of Ariosto…at dinner time

Free dinner. In the morning, availability permitting [ for safety reasons ], we will take you to Vagli di Sotto to visit one of the most famous white marble quarries in the world, [ marble also used for the Sala Nervi in the Vatican ], located in the splendid Arnetola Valley. We will experience first-hand the reality of the quarrymen, we will understand how work in the quarry has changed over time, [ we recommend wearing comfortable, sporty clothing and shoes with sturdy soles ]. If it is not possible to do as described above, an alternative is to visit the Lipu Oasis of Campocatino: a primitive hollow overlooking the valley. Free lunch and relaxation on the shores of the lake. In the afternoon, visit to the new suspention  bridge and Lake Vagli, which, when emptyed for maintenance work, magically re-emerges as the ghostly ruins of a ghost town: Fabbriche di Careggine. On the way back “from the stable to the table”: a visit to a dairy. The producer opens the doors of his dairy and shows us the process of processing milk. We devote ourselves to tasting the different cheeses of their own production, with bread and honey. Possibility of purchasing products. Evening event in Sillico – I banditi del Sillico al tempo dell’Ariosto…all’ora di cena: ( The bandits of Sillico at the time of Ariosto ….Dinner time:  from 8.00 p.m. onwards, a historical and gastronomic review in the streets of the village with figures from the time of Ariosto [ In the event of rain, the event will be postponed to the next day ]. Overnight stay.

Day 3 CCastiglione di Garfagnana – Event: Medieval Festival

Free lunch and dinner. In the morning visit to the Cinta Muraria and Rocca di Castiglione di Garfagnana. Medieval centre that has preserved completely intact the walls, the medieval castle and the two churches of San Michele and San Pietro. Event in Castiglione di Garfagnana – Medieval Festival. Medieval re-enactment of the evocative setting of the fortified village. At 12.00 noon lunch in an osteria. From 4 p.m. onwards the village, immersed in a medieval atmosphere, will be animated by nobles, commoners, knights, historical parade, craftsmen’s stalls, jugglers and street artists. From 7 p.m. onwards, guests will be able to dine in the taverns along the streets of the village or book a suggestive dinner served in the churchyard of the church of San Michele. At 11 p.m. the fireworks display “L’incendio al castello ( The Castle fire ) “. Overnight stay.

Day 4 Castelvecchio Pascoli: Pascoli’s house – Calomini – return

Check-Out. In the morning a short stop in Castelvecchio Pascoli to visit the house where the poet Giovanni Pascoli lived and is buried. Move on to Calomini to visit the hermitage of the same name: a mystical monastery set in a vertical rock face. Free lunch. Departure for the return to the original destinations.
